President's Perspective
by: Joan M. Grzybowski, DO

June is a month of beginnings. It marks the beginning of a new season. For Pennsylvania it is the month our Osteopathic Medical Students graduate and become physicians. As part of the faculty of PCOM, I participated in this year’s graduation ceremony and witnessed this wonderful metamorphosis of caterpillar into butterfly. As I looked around, I saw the eyes of family and loved ones filled with pride, joy, and love.

Achieving the goal of graduation from medical school is one of the most amazing and one of the hardest things these young graduates will ever do. We, the POMA, would like to take his moment in time to congratulate the 2018 Class of Osteopathic Medical Schools graduating across the state of Pennsylvania. We welcome you all to this great profession. You are about to meet some extraordinary people and they will change you forever. You now begin the life and the profession you chose just four years ago. Go for it!

Executive Opinion

by: Diana M. Ewert, MPA, CAE

“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything”
Michael J. Fox

I’ve had the privilege of working with several nonprofit organizations over the course of my career. Each and every one has inherent traits such as collegiality and camaraderie. There is this intangible sense of belonging that engages you to work with your peers and contemporaries. But I never experienced the sense of family with the others that I have within osteopathic medicine. When you believe in the philosophy and practice of osteopathic medicine, you become a member of the family. This in turn affects the approach you take when working on behalf of the profession.

#TeamPOMA, willingly, spends the time necessary to achieve your goals and objectives. We believe in the mission, the care you provide and the unique attributes of the profession.  We care because you care. We put in the time because you put in the time. It is in this sense of family, that the POMA team is very happy to announce our newest member – Christian Joshua Dill, born on May 25 at 12:10pm and weighing in at 6 lbs 15 oz and 19.5" long.

Baby Dill

Christian was born right here in Harrisburg to our Director of Education and Communications, Brenda Dill and her husband Josh. Welcome to the family Christian!

Mental Health Task Force Grant Program Updates

As we near the conclusion of the academic year, we are starting to receive updates from the 2017-2018 Mental Health Task Force Grant recipients on how their programs went. Participants are sharing what they learned from the experience and how it impacted the participant individually and the residency collectively. This week's update is from the Washington Health System Family Practice.

Washington Health System Family Practice
Culinary Medicine

The food we put into our bodies has a huge impact in our overall health. This is why the Washington Health System Family Practice spent an evening learning about culinary medicine and the event was a great success!

In summary, the evening consisted of a hands-on cooking demo organized by our fantastic chef in the hospital cafeteria that included a salad, vegetarian chili, soup, and dessert, all of which were low in carbohydrates for diabetic patients.  While we enjoyed the food, our wonderful nutritionist provided a discussion on counseling diabetic patients in the clinic during our short office visits.

Pennsylvania's Osteopathic Colleges Hold Graduations

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) welcomed new DOs to the osteopathic family during recent commencement ceremonies.

On May 27, 2018, LECOM held its 22nd commencement ceremony at the Erie Insurance Arena, where 370 new DOs from the Erie and Seton Hill campuses received their degrees.

On June 3, 2018, LECOM Bradenton (Fla.) graduated its 11th class with 189 students receiving their DO degrees. The commencement ceremony was held at the Bradenton Area Convention Center in Palmetto, Florida.

On June 2, 2018, PCOM graduated 254 doctors of osteopathic medicine during its 127th commencement ceremony at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. The ceremony was kicked off with Jay S. Feldstein, DO ’81, president and CEO, speaking on humanism. He urged the new physicians to not focus solely on their clinical and scientific skills, but also on their humanity. Keynote speaker, Paul S. Zeitz, DO ’88, MPH, continued with this theme as he urged the doctors to use their voice to speak up for others.

On May 24, 2018, PCOM Georgia’s tenth DO class graduated. The event was held at the Infinite Energy Center in Duluth. Paul Evans, DO, FACOFP, a senior medical education consultant and the founding dean of GA-PCOM, delivered the commencement address titled “Learning From Failure."

POMA would like to congratulate all of the new DOs and welcome them to the osteopathic family!

Samuel Garloff, DO Another Voice Column

by: Samuel J. Garloff, DO

Today is June 8, 2018. According to the Department of Justice and Department of Defense, more children have been killed in school this year than military members in combat. In fact, more students have been killed in school so far this year, than all military personnel who died from all causes.

On February 14, 1929, seven members of the "Bugs" Moran gang were murdered in a warehouse on N. Clark St. in Chicago, Illinois. "Bugs" ran an Irish gang in North Chicago. The south side was controlled by Al Capone and his Italian gang. Millions of dollars were being made distributing liquor, running speakeasies, and providing gambling dens and prostitution. No love was lost between Bugs and Scarface.

Why Everyone Should Try Kickboxing

Jab! Cross! Left body hook! Right front kick! Left side kick! Right roundhouse kick! Beads of sweat drip down my face as I finish Round Six. I am exhausted. The sense of accomplishment is palpable. Not only have I made it through one hour of high intensity exercise after a long day of work in the office, but I have learned a few valuable life lessons along the way.

Pennsylvania Ranks 2nd in Nation for Reduction of Opioid Prescriptions

Governor Tom Wolf announced this week that Pennsylvania had the 2nd largest percent change for all 50 states in opioid prescriptions between 2016 and 2017, according to data released by IQVIA.

There was a decrease in prescriptions for opioids in Pennsylvania by 14% in 2017. This number is just behind New Hampshire who had a 15.1 percent decline.

This decrease is attributed to numerous initiatives introduced since Governor Wolf took office, including an increase in the use and accessibility of the state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).

Physician Licensure Renewal Reminder

Osteopathic physicians are reminded that the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine requires 100 CME credits for the 2016-2018 licensure cycle, which ends October 31, 2018.

As part of the 100 credits, physicians must earn at least 20 Category 1A AOA CME credits, at least 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting (Category1 or Category 2), at least 2 hours of opioid education (Category1 or Category 2), and at least 12 patient safety credits (Category 1 or Category 2). The credits for child abuse recognition/reporting and opioid education are counted into the sum of 100 credits and/or sum of 20 Category 1A credits but do not overlap into patient safety.

Additionally, the child abuse recognition/reporting course must be documented and reported to the Pa. Department of State by an approved course provider. Topics that qualify for opioid education include pain management, identification of addiction or the practices of prescribing or dispensing of opioids. The credits for opioid education and patient safety credits must also be documented by an AOA, ACCME, AMA or AAFP accredited sponsor (institution, health system, professional association, etc.)

Please note: If you are a POMA member, we can affirm how many credits you have earned for all POMA-sponsored programs. However, if you have not completed your CME reporting forms and returned them to the Central Office, you will not receive credit. Any credits earned outside of the POMA must be sent to the Central Office in order for us to record them. POMA's new and improved CME module is now available!  Active members can access the system by clicking here.
