Healthy Lifestyle Tips
As we move into the fall, remember these tips:
1. Know the Signs and Symptoms of Concussion and Head Injury
Concussion in athletes is a very common type of mild traumatic brain injury. Be sure to identify the signs of concussion and receive appropriate care to keep your head in the game. - There are 1.7- 3 million diagnosed sports and recreation-related concussions every year. - Athletes are difficult patients because they withhold symptoms to avoid missing time to practice and play. - Early detection of concussion symptoms is key. Undiagnosed and untreated concussions can have long lasting, life changing health implications. - Concussion symptoms emerge within minutes or hours, depending on the severity of the injury. Symptoms typically last 7-10 days. - Athletes should only return to play after being cleared by a physician. - Premature return to play has increased risk for decreased reaction time leading to an increased risk of injury.
2. Protect Yourself during Cold & Flu Season
Flu season begins in October, peaking between December and February. Protect yourself and your family by following these easy tips: - Prevent the spread of germs by washing your hands frequently. - Don't get too run down; get 8-10 hours of sleep at night. - A flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older, per the CDC. - Eating fruits and vegetables, and staying hydrated boosts your immune system to naturally fight off infection.
3. Know the Numbers for Teens & Substance Use
The stats are alarming. No parent wants to admit that their child has a life-threatening illness, like addiction, but treatment is available. - Addiction to alcohol and drugs has reached epidemic levels in the US, affecting more than 138 million Americans. - Drug use went up 61% among 8th graders between 2016 and 2020.* - 62% of 12th graders have abused alcohol.* - 47% of 12th graders have tried illicit drugs.* - 2.08 million 12- to 17-year-olds have used drugs in the last month.* - Among them, 84% report using marijuana in the last month.* - It's never too soon to start talking to your kids about drug abuse. - Know your kid's activities and their friends. - Keep track of prescription drugs and alcohol. - Establish rules and consequences and provide support. - Recognize the warning signs of teen drug abuse and seek help . *Source: National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics
