President's Perspective Dr. Goldman

by: Pamela S.N. Goldman, DO

We DO...Communications

Over a year ago, the leadership and Board of Trustees of POMA adopted a four-pillar strategic platform for the association.  Those four pillars include communication, community, advocacy, and education.  These encompass the tenants and keys activities of the association.  Each newsletter article this year from the President’s Perspective is about one of these aspects of the strategic plan.  All of our activities must fall under one of these four categories or it does not receive consideration for our association.

Effective communication is one of the key characteristics of a successful organization.  In the last two years, we have installed and utilize a new member management system which allows communication to flow more readily between the main office and our members. This means of communication through electronic and paper formats, allows interaction with members as it is needed.  In May, the POMA app (PA Osteopathic Medical Association) launched as a way to quickly access your member information including CME, district meeting information, legislative updates, and educational program information.  As I serve on committees, the information I need to be an active member on the committees is contained in the app as well.   The website (www.poma.org) is also being continually updated.  The information on the website is readily available through my mobile phone or desktop to access the things that I need as a member of the association.

Did you hear about the latest district meeting and local CME event?  Information regarding where and when they are being held can be found on either the website or the app. It’s also found here in the newsletter.

How can you find out about legislation and discussions going on in Harrisburg that may affect the way you practice?  We keep an ear to activity on the state level and convey to you items pertaining to the practice of osteopathic medicine and the welfare of our patients in Pennsylvania.  You will see communication from our legislative team using the database, Voter Voice, encouraging interaction and calls-to-action with state legislators on medicine-related topics.

Many of us only know what’s going on in the world outside our practices because of social media.  POMA has a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram presence.  Keep updated with the latest POMA information while you check in with the rest of the news of the day.

How Are You DO-ing?  We provide opportunities for you to share your well-being victories and strategies with fellow colleagues as a blog, newspaper article, and shared on social media.  Most of us have a well-being journey story to share.  Feel free to write a short article.

Communication takes many forms and POMA recognizes that each person in our membership seeks a unique way to receive and send information.  To meet the needs of our members, we adapt to the current culture and preferences.  Our goal is to continue to provide a conduit for communication to receive information from members and to inform in a timely and accurate manner.

Executive Opinion Diana Ewert

"And all at once, summer collapsed into fall." - Oscar Wilde

Some live for the summer. Others live for the winter. And still others yearn for spring. I love fall. Fall means cooler weather (read lower utility bills) and all that goes with it. It’s a time where we settle into the routine that takes us through the holidays to the end of the year.

If POMA could have downtime – time to reflect – it would be fall.

Fall is learning. We’ve completed the cycle of programs for the year starting with the District 8 winter program, leading right into the Annual Clinical Assembly followed by the POFPS CME Symposium with all follow-up completed in early September. We assess what we have done to impact patient care. We plan where to move next. We meet the freshmen COM student classes for LECOM, Seton Hill and PCOM. I admit that one of the best perks of my position is participating in the White Coat & Stethoscope ceremonies where the students receive a stethoscope with their coat courtesy of the POMA Foundation and the Advocates of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (APOMA).

Fall is anticipatory. Just as we personally anticipate the coming holidays (and I consider Halloween to be a holiday) with family and friends, we also anticipate the return of legislators and how this will impact the practice of osteopathic medicine. We anticipate what legislation will move and what may be held. We anticipate regulatory interpretations and how we can best prepare you to deal with the issues, such as Act 96 - click here for more information. Rest assured that your #TeamPOMA is all in to support you and the profession. And this fall determines our accreditation status with ACCME which has been two years in the making.

Fall is appreciation. We appreciate the end of 100+ degree days. We appreciate the beauty of nature as the leaves turn. We (I) appreciate the start of football, and Halloween and Thanksgiving, and the end of re-runs.

POMA Prepares for PA General Assembly Return

Members of the Pennsylvania House and Senate are set to return to Harrisburg for Legislative business in the next two or three weeks respectively. POMA is readying and positioning itself to work on multiple issues important to POMA members. The first is opposition to Senate Bill 25, which is in the House Professional Licensure Committee. SB 25 would remove the collaborative agreement requirements between physicians and CRNPs, leaving them to make acts of medical diagnoses and prescribe therapeutic responses with no oversight of a physician. POMA has argued this is not the best interests of patients based in part on the vast difference in training and education between physicians and CRNPs.

SBOM Report

by: Randy Litman, DO, MBA, FACOFP, FAAO, FACOI, Board Chair

Two important messages from the August 14, 2019 meeting of the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine:

The advent of telemedicine in Pennsylvania, and the critical need for physicians in underserved areas, has often been a difficult process for talented physicians, licensed in other states, whom apply to our state by endorsement. Act 41 of 2019, signed by Governor Tom Wolf is intended to cut bureaucratic red tape to make it easier for physicians with an out-of-state occupational license to work here. The bill provides for licensure by endorsement from the boards and commissions under the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs in the Department of State. The license could be issued on an individual basis if the licensure requirements in the other state, territory or country are determined to be substantially similar to Pennsylvania’s requirements. The boards also have the authority to grant a provisional endorsement license while an applicant completes requirements specific to Pennsylvania, such as the required child-abuse training. This law takes effect September 1, 2019.

Currently, the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine oversees licensees for Respiratory Therapy, Perfusionists, Physician Assistants and Certified Athletic Trainers. The Governor appoints a member to the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine from one of these groups, to serve on a rotational basis, every four years. Physician Assistants, which number over 8,000 in our Commonwealth, have appealed to the board for membership exclusive of the rotational group. The Pennsylvania chapter of the Physician Assistant Group has presented formally to the Board its intention to be considered for membership. Discussions are in progress.

Attend a Funeral

It doesn’t matter if you are new to medicine or more experienced, we will all be faced with a situation where a patient we are caring for dies.  Regaining your strength when this occurs is a challenge.  Depending on the situation there may be sadness, inadequacy, fear and loss of self-confidence.  Allowing yourself to feel these emotions and move on is critical.

If the patient is a person that you were close to or felt a connection, don’t be afraid to attend their funeral.  It can have a profoundly restorative effect upon you. Your presence can provide peace and closure to the family as well.

I’ve never regretted going to a funeral, but I have regretted not going.  Consider attending the funerals of those patients who were special to you.  It will enhance your practice and life personally, as well as professionally.

POMA Urges Toomey/Casey to Support THCGME

In an effort to preserve primary care training opportunities, POMA co-sponsored a letter urging Pennsylvania’s US Senators to support the Training the Next Generation of Primary Care Doctors Act of 2019, S 1191.  Senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey have received letters asking for their support of the bill, which would preserve over $13 million for Pennsylvania.  Write your members of Congress today and ask them to co-sponsor S 1191.  It’s easy, click here to take action now
