President's Perspective
by: Joan M. Grzybowski, DO

This month we lost two celebrities to suicide, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. We also lost 4000 persons that we will never know, for the same reason. These are people we will never have the opportunity to know or love or try to help.

According to the CDC the suicide rate has increased by 27 percent from the years 2000-2014. Adults aged 35 -64 are killing themselves at the fastest rate. Below you will find the number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

1-800-273-8255 (TALK)

This number connects callers in the local area through a network of community crisis centers. The AOA has committed a Task Force to deal with Mental health Issues. Educate yourself on ways to help prevent suicide, post the number in your office, it may save a life.

Sometimes just reaching out to a person and asking how they are doing can be the words that make a difference and change the direction they are headed.

Executive Opinion

by: Diana M. Ewert, MPA, CAE

“Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.”
– Andrew Carnegie

I celebrate my first full year with POMA on July 1. It’s been challenging. It’s been interesting. It’s been rewarding. It’s been amazing! We’ve done remarkable things in Finance, Education, Membership and Advocacy.

In my first week, I was reviewing payables when I came across a vendor check for a modest amount to pay for a service agreement. On what, you might ask? IBM electric typewriters. The ones I learned to type on. Today, they serve as a reminder on how we raised our technology bar to better serve POMA members. Accounting and finance is being kept up-to-date using modern software, electronic banking and on-line check approval. There are many other advances that have been achieved in operations. Technology now works for us…we no longer work for it. Stream lining processes helps to reclaim staff time and channel these resources into other areas.

Our website is clean and modern, and our association management system continues to evolve. Did you know that as a member benefit, you can log-in to our website and see where you are in the licensing cycle? You can see what credits you need, and you can print out your CME certificate for the Annual Clinical Assembly anytime you need to. We’ve developed a tutorial that shows you exactly what to do.

Continuing with advances in education, we are doing final tests on a program that will let you upload any CME you participate in, outside of POMA, along with the certificate you’ve received and get a complete picture of your activities in a few simple keystrokes. This is one way we are increasing the value of your membership. POMA continues along the path to become an ACCME accredited CME sponsor. This means we can offer both AOA 1-A credit and AMA PRA Category 1.

You can now register for meetings and pay dues on-line. We continue to work on the strategic plan which directs resources to the programs, products and services you value most. We are in the process of finalizing an insurance relationship that will offer members a significant discount on medical malpractice and other types of insurances. More will follow.

Advocacy is and continues to be a highly-rated member benefit. POMA is the only organization that advocates specifically for the osteopathic profession. The POMA Board approved a public affairs campaign to help us get the word out about scope of practice expansion. Non-physician clinicians, while an important part of the health care team, are not physicians. Scope expansion without collaborative practice arrangements impacts patient safety. Utilizing opinion editorials (OP-ED) allows us to share our concerns with legislators and the public. POMA in collaboration with our PA firm have placed two in the last two weeks with more to come. If you are interested in authoring an op-ed in your area, email me –[email protected]. Getting involved is the step towards taking action.

There is so much more that POMA is working on. But we are nothing without you, our members. We need your support. If you’ve not yet renewed your dues, do so today. Just click here and log-in. It’s just that easy now.

The District Dish

A Recap of Recent District Events

District 5

District 5 watching the Harrisburg Senators

It was the perfect night for baseball as POMA District 5 hosted “A Night at the Ballpark” at FNC Field I Harrisburg. Forty POMA members and their families enjoyed a Double AA baseball game between the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) and the Richmond Fly Squirrels (San Francisco Giants). The attendees enjoyed a complementary buffet dinner and seats directly behind home plate—so close you could see the batters’ sweat. Participants could network with their local colleagues while enjoying some nice family and friends time on a beautiful late spring evening. After the Senators won 3-0, a wonderful fireworks display capped the great night.

District 14 June Meeting

DVT and PE blot clots are seen throughout all practices across the state. Several treatment options exist on how to treat the problem. This was the main lecture topic for District 14’s member event on Wed. June 20th at Harvest in Newtown.

The pharmaceutical sponsored dinner began with a lecture by cardiologist Ronald Fields, MD.  Dr. Fields discussed the various treatment options and newly released research. The district 14 members, which included a radiologist, an internist, and emergency room doctors, enhanced the lecture by discussing how they approach the symptoms when they are presented to them.  Do you send them for extra testing or just put them on anticoagulated agent?  The group also discussed what happens in a traumatic situation and how in most cases a reversal agent is not needed because the various drugs clear the system within a day. Reversal agents are available as well.

DOs Receive International Recognition as Fully Licenses Physicians

The UN’s International Labor Organization (ILO), has issued a letter affirming that U.S.-trained osteopathic physicians are fully licensed physicians who prescribe medication and perform surgery. U.S.-trained DOs are now categorized with all other physicians as medical doctors which should help gain practice rights around the world. Read the full article in The DO.

Physician Licensure Renewal Reminder

Osteopathic physicians are reminded that the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine requires 100 CME credits for the 2016-2018 licensure cycle, which ends October 31, 2018.

As part of the 100 credits, physicians must earn at least 20 Category 1A AOA CME credits, at least 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting (Category1 or Category 2), at least 2 hours of opioid education (Category1 or Category 2), and at least 12 patient safety credits (Category 1 or Category 2). The credits for child abuse recognition/reporting and opioid education are counted into the sum of 100 credits and/or sum of 20 Category 1A credits but do not overlap into patient safety.

Additionally, the child abuse recognition/reporting course must be documented and reported to the Pa. Department of State by an approved course provider. Topics that qualify for opioid education include pain management, identification of addiction or the practices of prescribing or dispensing of opioids. The credits for opioid education and patient safety credits must also be documented by an AOA, ACCME, AMA or AAFP accredited sponsor (institution, health system, professional association, etc.)

Please note: If you are a POMA member, we can affirm how many credits you have earned for all POMA-sponsored programs. However, if you have not completed your CME reporting forms and returned them to the Central Office, you will not receive credit. Any credits earned outside of the POMA must be sent to the Central Office in order for us to record them. POMA's new and improved CME module is now available!  Active members can access the system by clicking here.
