UPMC Horizon - Family Medicine Residency - Pittsburgh Penguins Game, February, 25, 2024

  1.  What was the general understanding of the purpose of the project/program by participants? Residency is very challenging and wellness activities are essential to have a good mindset, decrease burnout and maintain work/life balance. Our residents acknowledged that by participating in this activity, they'd be able to release stress, bond with their co-residents and families and learn/enjoy about other things different from Medicine.
  2. Why did you choose the specific wellness project/activity? Sports events are great opportunities to establish comradery with their counterparts and release endorphins which help stress control.
  3. During the project/program, what tangible tools or strategies were demonstrated or taught to address wellness and life balance? The residents had the opportunity to talk to their co-residents and families, learn more about Hockey and the specific teams (what makes the Pens stronger, the 5 points Crosby scored, team-strategy, etc).  Communication, friendship, team-playing, among others, were tools/strategies that touched the resident's lives and helped with wellness. The residents had a blast cheering, relieving stress and just enjoying a great time outside work - Definitely helped with bonding.
  4. What do you intent to do, upon returning to work, that you learned and practiced during the activity, that will improve your response to stressful situations?. The residents learned more about teamwork and, especially with this event, that laughter is sometimes the best medicine!
  5. What can POMA do to address wellness and life balance for your future? Keep supporting activities like this one!
