The Real Calling

June 2026 | Vol. 70, No. 2
By Maria Sara Cueto, LECOM Seton Hill OMS-III

It took me years to realize,
but I eventually concluded
that my job
is not what I’d always pictured:
caring for others,
all smiles and all glory
with nothing left but satisfaction.
There is also grief. And loss. And worry.

My job, as it turns out,
is to be there
for those who need it most,
and to hold them
during their darkest times
and also their best ones.

My job is to celebrate life,
to honor it,
and to acknowledge its passage.
And the chance to walk
along other people’s paths,
I wouldn’t change for the world.
