Obtaining Your Resident Training License

All medical residents are required to obtain a training license prior to the start of their residency training in Pennsylvania. Below is important information from the Pennsylvania Department of State regarding the licensing process and the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine (SBOM).

Note: POMA is not directly involved in the licensing process. However, we maintain a strong working relationship with the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and will advocate for and assist our members with licensing concerns when needed.

About the Licensing Process

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania utilizes the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS) to issue resident training licenses.

The state has provided training to hospitals and health systems to streamline the licensure process. New residents should work closely with their hospital or health system to ensure applications are submitted in a timely manner.

Once the hospital completes its portion of the application, the resident will receive an email notification. At that point, the resident must log into PALS, complete required legal questions, and upload any necessary supporting documentation.

Applications are processed in the order they are received.
