President's Perspective
by: Joan M. Grzybowski, DO

This past weekend I was privileged to see an eagle up close and personal in the wild. He was perched high being able to see a wide view of all he needed yet kept his eagle eye trained on all my movements. Being president allows me to see a wide view of our state’s Osteopathic environment because of the broad perspective it allows me. As I visit districts and attend a variety of medical meetings and seminars, I use the information I learn to address future plans for POMA.

Next week our state will hold its elections, we wish a warm welcome to those that will be new to Harrisburg. POMA is planning a strategy of reaching out to our new legislators and educating them on our initiatives.

This weekend we will have a Board Meeting in Harrisburg focusing on our Strategic Plan. We will focus on Education, Community, Advocacy, and Communication. The early data and discussions have been exciting. As they are implemented over the near and distant future, they will make your organization an even more useful and valuable tool to you the members and make POMA's footprint in Pennsylvania even more impactful to the physicians, students, residents and citizens of Pennsylvania.

The Eagles are coming back to Pennsylvania stronger than before and so is POMA’s presence being noticed and felt...stronger than before as each year and day allows us to grow.

Executive Opinion

by: Diana M. Ewert, MPA, CAE

I love what I do. Seriously. I really love what I do and I’m excited that this weekend I get to do more of it. POMA is embarking on the path to develop a strategic plan.

I’ve facilitated many strategic plans over the course of my career. This one, however, means the most. I can see POMA’s future. Studying the survey data, talking to members of all types – solo practice, group practice, employed, residents, students – gives us a baseline to build on.

Your POMA Board of Trustees will reach consensus this Saturday on the four pillars of our future success – Influence, Education, Communications and Community. Once we have the goals and strategies, the future direction for your organization, Team POMA will develop a strategic budget that will resource the priorities. This budget will be presented to the POMA House of Delegates at the Annual Clinical Assembly and on July 1, 2019, we hit the ground running. And you have another reason to Choose POMA.

A recap of recent District events

Districts 4 & 6

District 4 and District 6 event

Asthma affects over 26 million Americans.  The condition affects over a million adult Pennsylvania’s alone. District 4 and District 6 combined a membership meeting to learn about different ways to treat the condition. Sandra Gawchick, DO led the discussion of different treatments and how patients reacted to them. She emphasized to educate patients that you must continue treatments, even if they do or do not see results. It is a long-term plan.

Congratulations Lori Hildebrand!

APOMA with AAOA

Early in October at OMED '18 in San Diego, APOMA had one of its own members, Vice President Lori Hildebrand, sworn in as a Director to the board of the AAOA, a term that is continuous for 2 years. We already have one director on the AAOA board, Caryn Helhowski. Elizabeth Swallow was the Secretary/Treasurer for the 2017-2018 year. Your Pennsylvania Board of Advocates is working diligently to add new and different events at our conventions. Please join our ranks by sending in your dues to become a supportive and, hopefully active, Advocate member to APOMA.

How are you doing

It's OK to Say No

As physicians, we’re all familiar with the saying, “It takes 30 minutes to say no and 30 seconds to say yes.”  The unique demands of this profession – including the value of our time and patient satisfaction measures not always being what is best for the patient – sometimes cause us to fall into the trap of saying the easy yes when we should say the difficult no.

Although this saying typically comes to mind when talking about controlled substance prescriptions, I have tried to apply it to my personal time.  What I have learned (and I suspect most other physicians have too) is that when I say yes to patients, it can mean I am saying no to my personal life: family, friends, vacation time, and many of the other obligations I have in my life outside of patient care.  In no way do I mean to imply that we should not give our patients our best.  Indeed, we should give each patient 100% when we are engaged with them.  But every time we say yes to seeing just one more patient, we may be saying no to ourselves.
