President's Perspective Dr. Goldman

by: Pamela S.N. Goldman, DO

"We DO"
Community Pillar

As the academic year comes to an end and graduations occur, we reflect on those individuals who influenced us throughout our lives and careers.  We all have those people who help us make key decisions at pivotal points that change our path, our perspective and our lives.

Think about the people who helped you to decide what undergraduate school to attend.  How about the decision to go to medical school?  Who was the osteopathic physician who wrote your letter for entrance into an osteopathic college of medicine?  Who spoke wisdom into your life when you needed it most?

Osteopathic physicians are excellent at teaching and sharing what we know.  We volunteer to interact with the upcoming generation of doctors and glean wisdom from the trailblazers before us.

One of the initiatives under the Community Pillar is the development of a mentor database and robust mentorship program.  Our students seek advice on specialty choices and career options.  Our residents want to know how to balance work schedules with demands at home and how to start repaying their student loans.  Our newer-to-practice physicians seek career advancement opportunities and community with those in similar phases of life.  Our established physicians want to know how to either grow their business (or increase their RVUs) or how to retire well.  And our retired physicians want to share the wisdom of what they have learned and pursue new interests.

Whether you are interested in being a mentor or getting mentored, POMA has the opportunity for you.  Make a difference in the life and career of someone in our Pennsylvania osteopathic family by completing the interest form or by sending an email to [email protected] with the subject: Mentor.

Take a few minutes today to thank someone for the role they played in your life, helping you to be the person you are today.

Share how you mentor on social media #POMAmentor.

Executive Opinion

"A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself." - Oprah Winfrey

Reading Dr. Goldman’s article brings home how important mentoring is. Just this morning I received an email from a student interested in learning about osteopathic medicine, asking if there is a mentor available in his area (he’s completing undergrad studies at Drexel and if you’re interested in helping, email me). The more the undergrads, and high/middle schoolers learn about the osteopathic profession, they more they understand how the philosophy and practice benefit people.  And one way they learn is through mentoring.

Chances are as you read this, I’m returning from the LECOM/Seton Hill Student Awards Luncheon before graduation ceremonies over the weekend. It is a privilege to have presented POMA’s Outstanding Student of the Year award on behalf of Dr. Goldman. I just can’t get over the fact that these future DOs, who look so young, will likely take care of me in the next 10-15 years. The benefit of being with POMA is that I know how these future physicians were educated, trained and mentored. I and my “boomer” compatriots will receive the highest level of medical care available as we age and it will be provided by an osteopathic physician.

I’m becoming more familiar with all of the COMs since becoming the chief staff officer. There are wonderful and amazing things being done on campus by osteopathic medical students and faculty. One of the programs offered by LECOM brings high school students to the campus for a week long immersion course about medical school and the osteopathic profession. MASH, or Medical Applications of Science and Health, allows these students to experience a small part of what is involved in becoming a physician. These high schoolers work with osteopathic physicians and students over seven days. I’m betting by the end, mentorships are built that last a lifetime.

Who saw the hope in you? Tweet their name with the hashtag #POMAmentor, then pay it forward…

The Calm Before the Storm??

As we prepare cookouts and enjoy time with our friends and family this coming weekend celebrating Memorial Day, legislators will be doing the same. However, the month of June is a notoriously busy time in the Harrisburg halls of state government. This is mainly because a state budget will be due by June 30 (or sometime thereafter) before the General Assembly breaks for the Summer.  This coincides with many bills that will likely see movement in the legislative process, some helpful to DOs and their patients, and some, not so much.

POMA will be battling the CRNPs perennial quest for independent practice legislation and other bills that would interfere with the physician-patient relationship. On the positive side of the ledger, POMA will help pave the way in support of legislation that will provide transparency and streamlining of the prior authorization process. It is a complicated dance of good and bad, but POMA will be your voice in the stormy legislative action!

So, while we relax and celebrate Memorial Day, we know that the legislative storms of June/budget season will keep POMA on its toes looking out for DO best interests and that of your patients!

Public Health Points

The Pennsylvania Department of Health wants you to be aware of the following hot topics:

  • Hepatitis A outbreak declared in Pennsylvania on May 20th.  Philadelphia and Allegheny counties are hardest hit but increased cases are being seen across the state.  While Hepatitis A is highly contagious, a vaccine is available.  Click here for additional information and resources.
  • As we spend more time outside, remember to check for ticks!  Ticks are everywhere in Pennsylvania and carry a number of diseases.  Limit your exposure by wearing long sleeve shirts, long pants, use an insect repellent with DEET and shower after coming indoors.  And don’t forget to check your pets!  Learn more about ticks here.
  • Pennsylvania had its first reported measles case late last month.  Officials have confirmed over 700 cases in 22 states in 2019.  The MMR vaccine is recommended to prevent the spread of this highly contagious, potentially fatal disease.  Visit the CDC Measles resource page for more info.

Juggling Life as an Internist, Weekend Hospitalist, and Soccer Dad

Dr Graeca and son

The life of an internal medicine specialist who also works as a weekend hospitalist for a small community hospital in rural western Pennsylvania in itself is very busy. But what if that internist also is a father of five children ranging in age from 10 to 18 years and shares their passion for soccer? That’s a game changer!

Steve Graeca, DO has coached soccer at all levels ranging from peewee to high school varsity. When his oldest daughter, now pre-med student Meghan, was four years old, he began his coaching career. As Meghan moved up in the ranks and levels, so did coach Steve, on the field with her through her high school varsity season. He has coached all his children, including twins Nicholas and Alexander (16), Emily (13) and Lauren (10).

DOs in Action

Dr. Leary in China

This past March, Dr. Pat Leary, along with Drs. Rob Franks, and Andrew Matin, were in Shenzhen, China, as part of the International Primary Care Educational Alliance (IPCEA) Program. This program is run in conjunction with American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP). During this trip, they took time to teach 28 Chinese Doctors musculoskeletal medicine, including OMT. During the five day trip they covered knee, shoulder, and low back injuries. The program has had AOASM members serve as educators in the past with Drs. Leary and Franks making return trips to China.

The two-year program, sponsored by the Chinese government, is an attempt to augment Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with Western Medicine techniques. It is also a necessity in China to attempt to increase the number of Primary Care Physicians in the hugely populous nation.

While there, Drs. Leary, Franks, and Martin were able to see many parts of China, including Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macau with their Chinese hosts and counterparts.
