That's a Wrap!

Another Successful Clinical Assembly in the Books!

In this year’s clinical assembly program book, we posed a question to you and want to revisit it now that the conference has ended. Why did you choose to become a DO? We’re sure all of you have been asked this question during your careers and you may have even asked it of yourself at one point or another. The question is an important one because it holds much more in value than just general curiosity. Your answer is the center of why you get out of bed and do what you DO every day.

We’re willing to bet that at least a part of your reasoning for choosing the osteopathic profession is because you wanted to be able to help make a difference in your patients’ lives. There is no doubt this is a great reason and one we feel should be part of every DO’s answer. But, we also understand there may be roadblocks that pop up and hinder your ability to do this, leaving you frustrated. So how do you get past these obstacles and be confident you are fulfilling your reason for entering this profession?

We continue to believe a large part of it is through continuing medical education. “Improving Patient Care Through CME,” was this year’s conference theme and POMA’s 110th Annual Clinical Assembly & Scientific Seminar focused on addressing many of the roadblocks that our physicians face to better the care they provide. Throughout the week, the education program covered new knowledge and technology, as well as the first-hand experiences of our experts. It is our hope that these sessions provided some insight on how you can get back on track when working to better your patients’ lives.

Speakers at the 110th clinical assembly

In addition to the variety of spectacular educational sessions, there were multiple networking opportunities such as the Welcome Reception on Wednesday evening, the 2nd Annual Beers & Careers Networking event on Thursday and luncheons where you had the chance to meet up with colleagues, old and new, as well as so much more. Each event was meant to provide you with one more tool for overcoming those roadblocks.

Networking events at the POMA convention

We brought back the POMA member area with the addition of a tech bar where members could ask questions regarding the new POMA website, the new CME module and the POMA convention app. POMA staff was on hand to walk physicians through the process of checking their CME report, self-reporting CME credits, and completing the online conference attestation and evaluation forms. Hopefully, our members have a better understanding of these new technology additions.

It is our hope that this year’s program, along with many of the other changes POMA has been implementing, aids in allowing you to continue to improve your patient care. We wouldn’t be able to provide this robust and informative conference without the hard work and dedication of our Convention Committee and members of our affiliated organizations. A huge thank you also goes out to the exhibitors and companies who support our program. Last, but not least, thank you to our Central Office staff who each year, works tirelessly each year to make the week appear effortless.

We remain #POMAProud!

POMA's 3rd Annual Leadership Forum

A group of residents gathered on Saturday for the 3rd Annual Resident Leadership Forum. The program was moderated by physician leaders who organized topics that are not normally on the curriculum but are critical to success in a career in medicine. Physician mentors and POMA leadership facilitated discussion on topics such as time management, contract lingo, patient apology, practice options and advocacy.

The program continues to grow in popularity and is open to all osteopathic students and residents.  Save the date for our 4th annual leadership forum – May 4, 2019!

APOMA Open Meeting

Eggs Benedict & CSI Make for an Unforgettable Meeting

APOMA held an open meeting on May 4, 2018 during the Annual Clinical Assembly. Wendy McDonald RN, AAOA President joined the members and spoke to them about AAOA programs, including social media usage, the Student Advocate Association, mid-stage members, as well as the use of ZOOM for remote meeting access. Ms. McDonald also discussed the Yellow Ribbon Program and the OMED Fun Run with proceeds going to the SAA. Later in the meeting, guest speaker Gregory McDonald, DO gave a lecture on “Crime Scene Investigation.” Dr. McDonald is Chair of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Pathology at PCOM.

Making Our Voices Heard

Members stopped by the POMA Membership Booth at the 110th Annual Clinical Assembly to write letters to their representatives in opposition of House Bill 100 and Senate Bill 25. POMA staff was on hand to assist in looking up each person's legislator. The letters were mailed last week.

If you did not get a chance to write your legislator last week, please do so now. Elected officials are more available and receptive to contact from their constituents in the districts. Express your opposition (in person is best or by telephone, AND in writing) on this issue relative to CRNP Legislation (HB 100, SB 25). POMA has emailed and sent a hard copy of our opposition letter to all House members in advance of your contact. Your one-on-one interaction is our most effective tool to influence this issue.

Beers 'n Careers
Sparks Opportunities

beers and careers

The 2nd Annual Beers ‘n Careers Networking Event occurred on Thursday, May 3 of the POMA Clinical Assembly. Ten recruiters from various health care groups, hospitals, and companies conversed with over 200 of the conference attendees. It was a free-flowing reception with various snacks, including a donation from Herr’s. The music and the various board games around the room provided a relaxed atmosphere for both recruiters and attendees. Positive feedback was received by all participants, and many are already planning on participating in the event next year.

 Thank You Exhibitors/Sponsors!

Physician Licensure Renewal Reminder

Osteopathic physicians are reminded that the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine requires 100 CME credits for the 2016-2018 licensure cycle, which ends October 31, 2018.

As part of the 100 credits, physicians must earn at least 20 Category 1A AOA CME credits, at least 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting (Category1 or Category 2), at least 2 hours of opioid education (Category1 or Category 2), and at least 12 patient safety credits (Category 1 or Category 2). The credits for child abuse recognition/reporting and opioid education are counted into the sum of 100 credits and/or sum of 20 Category 1A credits but do not overlap into patient safety.

Additionally, the child abuse recognition/reporting course must be documented and reported to the Pa. Department of State by an approved course provider. Topics that qualify for opioid education include pain management, identification of addiction or the practices of prescribing or dispensing of opioids. The credits for opioid education and patient safety credits must also be documented by an AOA, ACCME, AMA or AAFP accredited sponsor (institution, health system, professional association, etc.)

Please note: If you are a POMA member, we can affirm how many credits you have earned for all POMA-sponsored programs. However, if you have not completed your CME reporting forms and returned them to the Central Office, you will not receive credit. Any credits earned outside of the POMA must be sent to the Central Office in order for us to record them. POMA's new and improved CME module is now available!  Active members can access the system by clicking here.
