President's Perspective Dr. Goldman

by: Pamela S.N. Goldman, DO

We DO...Education

By now, you should have received the follow up survey and questions (for extra CME credits) from the May Annual Clinical Assembly.  We hope you enjoyed the content and education of the program. A special shout out to the Education Committee and all their hard work planning, inviting speakers, reviewing the electronic materials for content and bias, and finally executing the program with excellence. The POMA staff also deserves great thanks for their assistance and support throughout the entire process.

Having the opportunity to teach colleagues in the conference format is an honor.  The process of individual learning and reviewing current evidence-based clinical practice and methodology is rewarding in itself. I gain more from preparing the presentation than perhaps the audience will receive.  Do you have an interest in teaching?  Providing updates to your colleagues to improve practice?  There are many formal and informal opportunities. You could present a topic at a district meeting. You could write an article for the POMA journal.  You could join the POMA Speakers Bureau and have an opportunity to educate as needed.

We choose to be members of POMA for the continuing medical education, keeping us fresh and aware of changes to the practice of medicine to the benefit of our members, our patients, and our osteopathic profession.

Executive Opinion

"Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead." - Nora Ephron

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2019! You are entering a profession of service to humankind. You are entering a time in medicine where technology is prompting exponential change. You may see the end of illnesses that has long baffled researchers. You will make a difference to those you touch. You will expand your knowledge for the rest of your life in order to better serve your patients and your community. The relationships you’ve made with your instructors, classmates and mentors will continue throughout your life. POMA has been here for you during your medical school tenure and POMA will continue to be here for you in the future. From residency to practice/employment to the time you retire, POMA will be here. You have our numbers and emails. Use them.

Again, congratulations to all of Pennsylvania’s graduating DOs, and our very best wishes for your next adventures!

POMA is Busy Protecting and Promoting DOs in Harrisburg

Health Committee

The Pennsylvania General Assembly came out of the gates running as multiple Committees conducted business and moved legislation dealing with healthcare issues POMA is either involved in or monitoring closely.

POMA started Monday of this week by sending an email to DOs throughout the state asking them to get involved and write their Senator to oppose Senate Bill 25, which would provide independent medical practice for CRNPs. It is possible the full Senate could vote the bill as soon as next week, mounting pressure on the House to do something on the bill. POMA is working hard on the Hill to stave off this effort.

Pennsylvania COMs Hold Graduation

2019 Graduation
*Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association Outstanding Student Awards were presented to: Tyler Jeffrey Pratte, DO, LECOM Seton Hill; Corbyn Levi Minich, DO, LECOM Erie; Hannah Christine Smerker, DO, PCOM

The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) welcomed over 600 new DOs to the osteopathic family during recent commencement ceremonies.

On May 26, 2019, LECOM held its 23rd commencement ceremony at the Erie Insurance Arena, where 357 new DOs from the Erie and Seton Hill campuses received their degrees. Dr. Joseph Yeager (LECOM ’19) reflects, “Now the real work begins. This is when you learn how to be the type of doctor you’re supposed to be.”

On May 24, 2019, PCOM graduated 260 doctors of osteopathic medicine during its 128th commencement ceremony at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Commencement speaker Daniel Hilferty, CEO of Independence Health Group, called on the graduates to “Be the one to transform how we care for one another in your own authentic way.”

The branch campuses of LECOM and PCOM also held their commencement ceremonies.  LECOM Bradenton (Fla.) graduated its 12th class with 194 students receiving their DO degrees. PCOM Georgia held its 11th DO commencement ceremony where 270 students became osteopathic physicians.

POMA would like to congratulate all of the new DOs and wish them well on their osteopathic journey!

Public Health Points

The Pennsylvania Department of Health wants you to be aware of the following hot topics:

  • As we prepare to spend more time outdoors, remember to wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and light, loose-fitting clothing; drink plenty of water; pace yourself during activities; and never leave children or pets in a vehicle. Click here for a complete list of safety tips.
  • June 7 is World Safety Day. The CDC reports that approximately 1 in 6 Americans get sick from foodborne illnesses each year. To prevent the spread of foodborne illness, be sure to properly clean, separate, cook and chill your food.  Visit the CDC's website to improve your knowledge of food safety.
  • Lyme disease affects thousands of Pennsylvanians every year, but ticks carry other diseases, too.  As we spend more time outside, be sure to check yourself, your kids and your pets for ticks!  Learn more about ticks here

How are you doing?

Scream...

by: Kathryn Graham, DO

Scream

Scream until [the child] feels better-

  • A parenting tactic employed by those raising toddlers (or teenagers).

Scream until you feel better-

  • An anger management tool for those under stress (hopefully not directed at coworkers).

Scream until something good happens-

I had spent countless Saturday hours glued to the TV watching various college games. I remember fondly the pomp and circumstance of the Michigan Men running out of the tunnel to “Hail to the Victors,” University of Florida fans celebrating touchdowns in “The Swamp” with their iconic gator chomp and was envious of the University of Southern California’s song girls and their special uniforms for what appeared to be an annual trip to the Rose Bowl.
