POMA is committed to creating and providing opportunities for open dialogue around health and personal well-being across the osteopathic profession. Specifically for residents, we promote well-being through focused activities sponsored by POMA and financially supported by the POMA Foundation.

Over the last five years, $32,500 has been awarded to 66 residency programs in Pennsylvania. Residents have planned paint nights, escape rooms, garden projects, obstacle courses, cultural celebrations and arcade fun. Project summaries are provided below.  

Resident Wellness Grant Applications are being accepted until October 1, 2022!  Apply by clicking here or submit a paper application.

Timeline Activities:
Grant Proposal Due - October 1, 2022
Grant Notification - November, 15, 2022
Program/Project Time Frame - January 1, 2023 through May 31, 2023
Results/Outcome Report and Survey Responses - Not less than two (2) weeks following program completion.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • POMA Membership Requirement: Programs require at least 25% osteopathic residents and at least 1 POMA Resident Member to apply for grants.
  • No alcohol-related activities or high-risk activities will be approved. Examples of high-risk programs include but are not limited to Axe Throwing, Shooting Ranges, Whitewater Rafting, etc. We encourage you to inquire if you have questions.
  • Support of the program director and facility for ongoing conversation following the completion of the granted project or program. 
  • •The grant does not allow for overhead / F&A Costs, nor should the funds be used for overhead/  F&A costs. 
  • Completion of Result Survey on time. Failure to complete Result Survey will prohibit eligibility for following year.
  • Grant approval is based on the activity submitted. Any modifications to the activity after approval will need to be reviewed and approved prior to the event being held.
  • To encourage collegiality with POMA and the POMA Foundation, a POMA representative may attend your activity to demonstrate support for your program.
  • POMA is not liable for any loss or risk associated with the activity.
  • The Grants are $500

UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine - Art and Garden 2021

Wednesday May 26th, 2021 during one of our Wellbeing Wednesday’s, we planned a gardening session for the residents. The purpose of the program was to spend time getting outside with one another while everyone got to paint and then plant their own pot and fill with flowers and herbs

Washington Health System - Yoga and Picnic 2021

WHS Family Medicine Residency Program has had an active Wellness Program since 2017. Activities have included enhanced Balint groups, Yoga, Tai Chi and other exercises classes, mindfulness training, reflective writing classes, special class nights and a yearly resident retreat. Residents are involved in planning many of the activities, specifically the class nights and yearly retreat.

UPMC LItitz Residency Barnstomers Baseball Game – June 10, 2021

Due to changing guidelines that our hospital system has in place from the COVID-19 pandemic, our wellness committee elected to pursue obtaining group tickets for our local baseball team. This allowed us to come together outside of the hospital in an open area while maintaining social distance guidelines. We were able to take part in multiple games throughout the baseball game; including the favorite of all, “sling the wing” event as we competed against each other (all in good fun) as we hurled rubber chickens trying to make it into a basket. It was certainly a way to bond!

Penn Highlands Residency - Escape Room 2021

We enjoyed our POMA sponsored resident retreat having lunch locally and then splitting into two groups to complete two different escape room activities. We originally wanted to eat at a locally owned restaurant called Napoli’s but unfortunately, they were closed for indoor dining due to COVID...

Jefferson Health Northeast Family Medicine Residency- Fun at the Arcade 2021

It was all fun and game at the arcade! We enjoyed our POMA sponsored resident to help destress ourselves from our rotations and to build bonds with our fellow residents. We rented out the arcades and just had a blast.
