Vol. XLV, Issue 8

April 18, 2019

President's Perspective
by: Joan M. Grzybowski, DO

This past Tuesday evening I met with a group of physician leaders representing, OB-GYN, Psychiatry, Family Practice and Internal Medicine. They call us the gang of six and sometimes Frontier Physicians. We convened that evening at the request of Congresswoman Madeline Dean. The purpose of the meeting was to inform her of who we are and what we represent and the common health issues that unite us. Representative Dean plays a pivotal role on a Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C. Many health policy issues come under her watch.

I represented Osteopathic Medicine, in that role I informed Rep. Dean and my allopathic colleagues of the huge role Pennsylvania plays as a leader in Primary Care Medicine.

Our state has the most Osteopathic Physicians of all 50 states and most are in a Primary Care field. I informed her we have three Osteopathic Medical Schools and over 8,536 DO's in our state. I described our philosophy and our goals.

We all discussed health policy issues that are affecting us like the opioid crisis, gun safety, big Pharma, prior authorization issues and the paucity of mental health providers.

Representative Dean took notes and listened to us intently. As the evening progressed each of us offered suggestions and expressed our viewpoints.

We cannot fix the health care crisis with a night of discussion, but it was a huge step in putting issues on the table that can be carried to people in D.C. who have the power to implement change.

I relayed to Representative Dean that it does not matter if you are a Democrat, Republican, DO or MD It just matters if we can all work together to produce positive results, that is what our patients are asking for.

I asked her to call on us if she had questions regarding Health Policy. It seems we do have people in D.C. and across our whole state who care. I left the meeting hopeful that the direction we are headed will be guided by people who truly care for our citizens, our patients and also for us, the physicians.

 Executive Opinion

"For last year's words belong to last year's language and next year's words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning. " T.S. Elliot

It has been an incredible year for POMA. The implementation of the strategic plan is a high point. Bringing on an additional team member with exceptional skills is another. Being so close to ACCME accreditation, having babies, being a volunteer… and there are many more.  But I admit to being a bit sad as well. Seeing the first president I served as CEO move off of the board is bittersweet. I’ll miss your wise counsel, Dr. Vermeire. We also lost a member who was the face of Exhibits at the Annual Clinical Assembly. We’ll be thinking of you next week, Dr. Zeliger. Dr. Grzybowski moves into the role of Immediate Past President. She has worked tirelessly in representing POMA this past year. She attended events, authored editorials, and tirelessly represents osteopathic board certification. You have  a calm voice of reason, Dr. Grzybowski and I look forward to seeing what more you will do

Pamela Goldman, DO will be installed as POMA’s 108th president. The first POMA president who graduated from LECOM! POMA is ready for your voice, your words and your efforts supporting the osteopathic profession. POMA will have new district trustees bringing their own unique experiences to the conversation. Diversity is a good thing. There are many individuals interested in serving on POMA committees who have not been involved before – an indication that POMA is healthy, inclusive, and moving forward. There will be new online education, growing influence, an increasing sense of community, and greater communication about who we are, what we do and how we do it in the coming year.

Let’s get to it.

We Need You!

DO Volunteer — All Member Call!

POMPAC Schedules Reception Honoring State Representative During Clinical Assembly

POMPAC is POMA’s Political Action Committee (PAC) which receives contributions from DOs and in turn, uses those donations to support state legislative candidates who are supportive of DOs and the care they provide. POMPAC can be viewed as the political arm of POMA. It is illegal to use POMA funds to make donations to the PAC. As a result, contributions must come from individual POMA members who recognize the value in supporting POMPAC because it will enhance POMA’s advocacy efforts.

POMPAC has scheduled a fundraising reception in honor of State Representative Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre) House Republican Whip. The reception will be held on Thursday, May 2 from 6:15-7:15 pm at the Annual Clinical Assembly with a donation set at $150. Rep. Benninghoff has been a supporter of POMA’s advocacy issues for many years.

This has not been attempted in the recent past and POMPAC is trying to make this event as successful as possible. Please consider joining us during the Clinical Assembly as POMA flexes its political muscle!

Penn Highlands Family Medicine - Team Building,
Bonding and Fun

Penn Highlands bowling

The Penn Highlands Family Medicine Residents were excited to participate in this year's event. We took the opportunity to use the Mental Health Task Force grant for focusing on healthy ways to deal with the stress and invited faculty and mentors to join us as well.  We started the afternoon with a healthy lunch from a local restaurant called Preskos, enjoying organic salads, poke bowls, and fresh fruit smoothies.  We then divided into two teams for bowling. We ranged from first time bowlers to very skilled.  There was a lot of laughing and encouragement.

DOs DOing More...

OMM on the Battlefield:  My experience as an Army Reserve-Medical Officer

Dr. Oline

Jonathan Oline, DO; Colonel Jonathan Oline, medical officer in the Army Reserve; or Volunteer Fireman, is truly a “DO Doing More" by giving back to his country and his community. In 2007-2008, he deployed to a combat zone in Mosul, Iraq while the U.S. surge was going forth in northern Iraq. There he performed emergency resuscitative care while working at the 86th Combat Support Hospital (CSH) serving with the 44th Medical Brigade, Airborne. His most recent deployment in 2018 was Camp Arifjan in Kuwait with the 452nd Combat Support Hospital (CSH).

The daily life in Camp Arifjan could never be called a walk in the park. With the afternoon temperature rising to 115 degrees and the stress and tension levels are at a constant high in a “hazardous zone.” It is hard to even fathom what it takes to mentally and physically prepare deploy to an area like this.  His primary responsibly was a Flight Surgeon who does the flight physicals for the army helicopter pilots and crew members. It required 24/7 duty to work closely with the Medical Regulating Officer (MRO) to clear all soldiers for MEDEVAC transportation out of theater. A large volume of primary care was done at the Military Treatment Center (MTC) where service members from all branches of the military were treated, as well as service members from multiple coalition countries and civilian contractors. Dr. Oline personally saw over 500 patients in a three-month period.
